The procedural chronology, stated factually and as of 2026-07: the lead writ petition (IUML v Union of India) was filed in December 2019, shortly after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 came into force on 10 January 2020; numerous connected petitions were subsequently tagged. An interim application to stay the Act was heard and DECLINED on 20 May 2020. After the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024 were notified on 11 March 2024, an application to stay the Rules was heard and DECLINED on 19 March 2024. The matter has since been listed for final hearing on constitutional validity, scheduled to commence on 5 May 2026 before the Chief Justice of India's bench. No merits determination has been made at any of these stages; the interim orders addressed only whether to suspend operation pending hearing, and in each case operation was not suspended. No outcome of the final hearing is asserted.
