The documentary cohort is the ~1.2-1.5M Greek-Orthodox transferees of 1923 — chiefly Anatolian, Pontic, Cappadocian, Ionian (Smyrna/Izmir-region) and Eastern-Thrace Greeks — plus Turkish subjects in ceded territory (Treaty Art 30). Their present-day descendants are the practical beneficiaries, but via Art 1 descent. EXCLUDED-origin examples (NOT made Greek in 1923): a family from Constantinople/Istanbul that was exempted from the exchange and remained Turkish nationals (claims today via GR-DSC-06 / Art 10); and Anatolian-Greek-origin lines that were displaced to the former USSR rather than to Greece, who use the Pontian/ex-USSR ομογενείς regime (GR-DSC-04 / GR-XCT-01).
Requisitos
No language or civics test attaches to this historical cohort or to its live successor descent route. Jus-sanguinis descent (Art 1 / GR-DSC-01) is determined on the documentary chain alone — there is NO ΠΕΓΠ exam for descent recognition. (The ΠΕΓΠ written exam, Greek at a B1-analogous level plus Geography/History/Culture/Institutions, is mandatory only for allogeneis NATURALISATION applicants from 1.4.2021 — a different route, GR-NAT-01.)
Documentos
No 1923 application-document set exists. For the live successor route (ordinary descent, GR-DSC-01) the binding documents are the jus-sanguinis chain: the ancestor's Greek-municipality registration (Δημοτολόγιο), the Male Registry (Μητρώο Αρρένων) for male-line links, civil-registry birth/marriage records for each generational link, and older Greek passports where a direct ancestor's registration is missing. A Greek birth certificate alone is NOT proof of municipal registration/citizenship. Foreign documents require an apostille (Greece is a 1961 Hague-Apostille party) plus an official Greek translation; EU civil-registry documents may use the EU Reg 2016/1191 multilingual forms without apostille.
Cómo solicitar
There is no live 'Lausanne' process. The historical conferral operated automatically by treaty (Treaty Art 30 ipso-facto for ceded-territory residents; Exchange-Convention Art 7 on arrival for exchanged emigrants) plus municipal/male-registry registration on resettlement. The live successor process is ordinary descent recognition: file a declaratory-decision (διαπιστωτική πράξη) application under Code Art 26 via a Greek consulate or the Regional Citizenship Directorate, supply the proven jus-sanguinis chain back to the Lausanne-transferee (or other Greek-national) ancestor, and obtain the determination. This is GR-DSC-01 procedure, not a GR-HIS-01 channel.
Plazos
Not applicable to a spent 1923 conferral. For the live successor route only: declaratory descent recognition (διαπιστωτική πράξη) under Art 26 is reported at roughly 18 months (~540 days), driven mainly by the time to assemble and authenticate the multi-generational documentary chain back to the Lausanne-transferee ancestor. These timelines belong to GR-DSC-01, not to GR-HIS-01, which has no processing pipeline of its own.
Tasas y costos
No fee schedule attaches to the 1923 conferral. The live successor route (descent recognition, GR-DSC-01) carries: administrative fee ~€100 plus consular fees ~€140-240 for the declaratory decision; apostille issuance is 'no charge' in Greece; certified Greek translations of foreign documents are an out-of-pocket cost. There is no 'Lausanne restoration' fee because there is no such application as of 2026-06-05.

Autoridad competente
Historically the conferral was treaty-based (Lausanne/Exchange Convention machinery) with registration handled by Greek municipalities (Δημοτολόγιο) and the Male Registry. For the live successor route, competence lies with the ordinary nationality authorities: the Central/Regional Citizenship Directorates (Κεντρική/Περιφερειακές Διευθύνσεις Ιθαγένειας) under the General Secretariat for Citizenship, Ministry of Interior, and the Greek consular authority abroad for declaratory descent recognition. Determination of pre-existing nationality 'in accordance with international agreements and conventions' (Lausanne/Ankara) runs through Code Art 25(2). No authority today processes a GR-HIS-01 treaty application because none exists in law (as of 2026-06-05).
Exceptions & edge cases
Edge case - Constantinopolitan Greeks: EXEMPTED from the exchange (Conv. Art 2), they remained Turkish nationals and were NOT made Greek by Lausanne (V-CORR 22); a descendant must show the ancestor SEPARATELY held Greek nationality (Art 1) or proceed via Art 10 ομογενής naturalisation (GR-DSC-06). Edge case - displacement to the USSR: Anatolian-Greek-origin families who fled to the former USSR rather than to Greece in 1923 are handled under the Pontian/ex-USSR ομογενείς regime (L.2790/2000; Art 15/Art 39 L.4604/2019), with Ankara/Lausanne ascertainment under Art 25(2)/Art 15(1)(b). Edge case - borderline 1923 status: where an ancestor's 1923 nationality is genuinely uncertain, Art 25(2) lets the authority determine it 'in accordance with … international agreements and conventions', i.e. taking Lausanne/Ankara into account.
Escenarios de ejemplo
Los escenarios de ejemplo se muestran en inglés.
age 70 · nationality: Greek
Already Greek; no action needed. The family's nationality originated in the 1923 Lausanne/Exchange-Convention conferral (Treaty Art 30 territorial-transfer and/or Exchange-Convention Art 7) and has since transmitted to descendants by ordinary Art 1 descent. The 1923 instruments are spent historical sources, not live channels.
Exchange-Convention Art 7 / Treaty Art 30 conferred Greek nationality on the 1923 cohort, which municipal registration then recorded (/162); Art 1 has transmitted it across the subsequent generations. This is the INCLUDED cohort — the historical root that GR-HIS-01 documents and that GR-DSC-01 now carries.
