Documents
- Adoption license or foreign recognition certificate
- Child's birth certificate
- Evidence of adoptive parent's Icelandic citizenship
- Child's age at adoption date (to confirm under 18)
Additional for age 12-17 adoptees with foreign citizenship:
- Child's current foreign passport or nationality certificate (establishing existing foreign citizenship)
- Written citizenship consent document (samþykki) signed by child
- Documentation that consent was given voluntarily and without duress (sýslumaður officer presence)
Timeline
Citizenship acquisition is automatic upon adoption recognition. Administrative delay relates to:
- Consent collection process (age 12+ cases): typically a few days to a few weeks
- Þjóðskrá registration: prompt once adoption and consent documentation complete
