Resumen

A geregistreerd partnerschap (registered partnership) is a Dutch civil-law institution distinct from marriage. For Dutch nationality purposes the two are treated alike in some places, and the research underlying this documentation does not establish that they are treated alike everywhere — and the uncertainty falls precisely on the two provisions that make the spouse route worth having.

Where registered partnership is expressly recognised in our sources. The Rijkswet treats marriage and registered partnership interchangeably when deciding whether a person counts as an adult for option purposes. And the fee schedule expressly gives the joint tariff to two spouses, two registered partners, or two people in a durable unmarried relationship who file at the same time.

Where it is not established. The provision that disapplies the five-year residence requirement is written in terms of a person who has for at least three years been the spouse of, and cohabits with, a Dutch national (Rijkswet article 8(2)). The provision that exempts an applicant from the duty to give up another nationality is written in terms of an applicant married to a Dutch national (article 9(3)(c)). The research pins both provisions in those words and pins no instrument equating registered partnership with marriage for them. We therefore do not state that it does — and neither should you assume it.

There is, separately, a clearly pinned route for unmarried partners with its own reduced residence period. See the requirements below.

Requisitos

Three positions to distinguish, all as of 2026-07-25 on the Rijkswet text in force unamended since 2023-10-01. Two are settled in our sources; the third is not, and the difference is expensive.

1. Married to a Dutch national for at least three years, cohabiting. The five-year residence condition does not apply at all (Rijkswet article 8(2)), and the applicant is exempt from the duty to do what is possible to lose another nationality (article 9(3)(c)). This is the three-year spouse naturalisation pathway.

2. Unmarried, in a durable relationship with an unmarried Dutch national, cohabiting continuously for at least three years. The residence period is not waived but is reduced from five years to three (Rijkswet article 8(4)). The same subsection gives the three-year period to stateless applicants. One carve-out: it is unavailable where Dutch nationality was previously withdrawn for having been obtained by false statement, fraud or concealment. Note carefully what this route does not do — article 8(4) reduces a residence period; it does not carry the renunciation exemption, which sits in article 9(3) and is keyed to marriage.

Common to all three. No objection to continued residence for an indefinite period; CEFR level A2 in Dutch across all four skills, plus the language current on the island of residence for applicants in Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten or the BES islands (Papiamentu for Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire; English for Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba); the good-character test with its five-year rehabilitation period; and willingness to make the verklaring van verbondenheid (declaration of solidarity), actually made at the ceremony before the decision is handed over.

Exceptions & edge cases

Get the classification settled before you pay. The fee is payable in one instalment and must be paid within six weeks of the request being received, failing which the request is set aside without being handled. Discovering after payment that the authority is treating you as an unmarried durable partner rather than as a spouse changes the residence requirement from none to three years, and puts the renunciation duty back on the table.

Registered partnership is expressly recognised for the joint tariff. Two registered partners filing at the same time pay the joint rate: EUR 1,454 for a standard naturalisation in the European Netherlands in 2026, against EUR 1,139 each for two single applicants; for an option declaration, EUR 412 joint against EUR 241 single (2026 schedule, WBN 2025/3, Stcrt. 2025, 31825, in force 2026-01-01).

The option route for partners is worse, not better. The option ground for spouses of Dutch nationals requires three years as the spouse of one and the same Dutch national together with fifteen years of uninterrupted admission and main residence in the Kingdom. Option is not the fast route for partners of any kind.

A relationship that ends mid-procedure. The conditions must still be met when the decision is taken, not merely when the request is filed. In the option context the policy records one relieving case: where a three-year marriage is broken by the Dutch spouse's death between the declaration and the decision, that is not held against the applicant. Whether the same relief is applied to a naturalisation request resting on three years of marriage is not established in our sources.

Cohabitation is the substantive test in the unmarried-partner route. The statutory language is continuous cohabitation in a durable relationship for at least three years with an unmarried Dutch national — so a Dutch partner who is still married to someone else defeats it.

The renunciation exemption, where it applies, is Dutch-side only. It says nothing about whether your other country of nationality strips you when you acquire another. Check that separately.
