Quién califica
Under Act 100/1952 §1 a (per L. 61/2018), a child born stateless (i.e., who would otherwise be stateless at birth) acquires Icelandic citizenship if the birth occurred on an Icelandic-flagged vessel (ship) or Icelandic-flagged aircraft. The provision extends the statelessness-prevention-at-birth rule beyond physical Icelandic territory to the "floating/flying territory" represented by Icelandic-flagged craft [pins: +].
The conditions are:
- Icelandic flag registration: the vessel (ship or aircraft) was registered under the Icelandic flag at the time of birth
- Statelessness at birth: the child would otherwise be stateless — i.e., the child does not acquire citizenship of any other state through either parent's nationality or the law of the state where the vessel is registered/operating
- Effective at birth: citizenship is acquired at the moment of birth — no subsequent application required; the factual circumstances at birth are determinative

| Citizenship quality | Full Icelandic citizenship (automatic) | Presumed citizenship (lapses if foreign nationality proven before age 5) |
Relationship to §1 a stateless-at-birth framework
§1 a (introduced by L. 61/2018 EIF 2018-07-01) created Iceland's statutory response to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. Iceland acceded to the 1961 Convention on 2021-01-26 ( from prior erroneous dates — IS-FAB-002 caught in /#43). The extension to IS-flagged vessels/aircraft operationalizes the Convention's Art 3 requirement that states treat births on ships/aircraft as births on their territory for statelessness-prevention purposes [pins: + +].

Base jurídica
- L. 61/2018 EIF 2018-07-01 — §1 a (stateless-at-birth framework) explicitly introduced, including flag extension; prior versions of Act 100/1952 may have had implicit protection but L. 61/2018 codified the framework in response to Iceland's 1961 Convention accession trajectory
- Iceland's accession to 1961 Convention 2021-01-26 — provided international-law backing for the domestic statutory framework
